Jennifer Paige - Crush

Jennifer Paige (born September 3, 1973) is an American singer-songwriter who rose to stardom in the early years of teen-pop, and is best known for her 1998 pop hit "Crush". The song was written by Andy Goldmark, Mark Muller, Berny Cosgrove and Kevin Clark. It was released as the first single from her debut album, Jennifer Paige (see 1998 in music). "Crush" reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remains Paige's biggest hit to date, topping the charts in six countries in 1998. The music video for "Crush" was produced by Kati Haberstok and directed by David Hogan. After Paige recorded "Crush" in April 1998, producer Andy Goldmark immediately took a copy of "Crush" to legendary Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM. During the first week of May, KIIS-FM became the first radio station to begin playing "Crush". "We had no pictures, photography, gotten it mastered, mass-produced it, nothing...", Jennifer said. Edel made an initial press run of 20,000 copies of "Crush" which sold very quickly, and "Crush" became KIIS-FM's most requested song.

In the next few weeks, other major radio stations nationwide added "Crush" to their daily rotation. By this time, many music labels had expressed interest in signing Paige. In early June 1998, she signed a contract with Hollywood Records, and many more stations began to play "Crush." Once "Crush" began its rotation on other radio stations, critics gave a positive review: "Paige is excellent, almost impossible to be meaningful without resorting to typical cries" - declared Billboard. On July 9, Paige made her first on-air appearance at KIIS-FM with Rick Dees. She also performed "Crush" for the first time live that day, and on July 24, "Crush" cracked the Top 10. Blender put "Crush" at 189th place on their list of 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born. They described the song as "...an unusually supple and sophisticated teen-pop hit informed by the level-headed sass of great R&B... swept along by a breathy chorus, pulsing groove and Paige's exquisite multilayered vocals. "Crush" was featured in the "Mrs. Kraft" episode of the third season of Sabrina the Teenage Witch in 1999, then in the made-for-TV movie, Sabrina Goes to Rome....(from wikipedia)

Matthew Sweet - Sick of myself

Sidney Matthew Sweet (born October 6, 1964, in Lincoln, Nebraska) is an American alternative rock/power pop musician. He was part of the burgeoning Athens, Georgia music scene in the early and mid-1980s before gaining commercial success during the early 1990s. He continues to release albums and tour. In 1995, Sweet released "100% Fun." The album mixed bouncy pop style with darker lyrics, including a leadoff track, the self-deprecating "Sick of myself." This is the stuff that power pop dreams are made of and it’s never sounded so good...

You don't know.. how you move me
Deconstruct me.. and consume me
I'm all used up.. I'm out of luck.. I am starstruck
By something in your eyes.. that is keeping my hope alive
But I'm sick of myself when I look at you..
Something is beautiful and true
In a world that's ugly and a lie
It's hard to even want to try
And I'm beginning to think.. Baby you don't know
I'll take or leave.. the room to breathe
The choice to leave you.. I'll throw away
A chance at greatness.. Just to make this..
Dream come into play.. I don't know if I'll find a way
'Cause I'm sick of myself when I look at you..
Something is beautiful and true
In a world that's ugly and a lie
It's hard to even want to try
And I'm beginning to think.. Baby you don't know
I'm beginning to think.. Baby you don't know
There's something in your eyes.. that is keeping my hope alive
But I'm sick of myself when I look at you..
Something is beautiful and true
In a world that's ugly and a lie
It's hard to even want to try
And I'm beginning to think.. Baby you don't know
I'm beginning to think.. Baby you don't know..

Radiohead

Radiohead are an English alternative rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, beats), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboard, other instruments), Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals), Colin Greenwood (bass guitar, synthesizers) and Phil Selway (drums, percussion). The band released their debut album, Pablo Honey, in February 1993. It stalled at number 22 in the UK charts, as "Creep" and its anthemic follow-up singles "Anyone can play guitar" and "Stop whispering" failed to become radio or video hits. "Pop is Dead", a non-album single later disavowed by the band, sold equally poorly. Some critics compared the band's early style to the wave of grunge music popular in the early 1990s—to the extent of Radiohead being dubbed "Nirvana-lite"—yet Pablo Honey failed to make either a critical or a commercial splash upon its initial release. Despite shared influences with popular guitar-heavy acts, and some notice for Yorke's falsetto voice, the band toured only British universities and clubs.

Anyone can play guitar : (Download)

"Anyone can play guitar" was a single taken from Radiohead's first album Pablo Honey, released just in advance of the album. It was the band's second single, and their first to receive a wide hearing ("Creep" had been issued in limited quantities some months earlier, and had failed to chart, but would soon become a hit and ultimately be re-released later in 1993). "Anyone Can Play Guitar" made relatively little impression on the charts, but it remained a staple of the band's live sets throughout the early-mid nineties.

Radiohead released The Bends in March 1995. The album was driven by dense riffs and ethereal atmospheres from the band's three guitarists, with greater use of keyboards than their debut. It also received stronger reviews for both songwriting and performances. While Radiohead were seen as outsiders to the Britpop scene that dominated the media's attention at the time, they were finally successful in their home country with The Bends, as singles "Fake plastic trees", "High and Dry", "Just", and "Street spirit (Fade out)" made their way to UK chart success; the latter song placed Radiohead in the top five for the first time. In 1995.

High and Dry : (Download)

Two music videos were created for "High and Dry", one produced for the American market and another for Britain. The first version, directed by Paul Cunningham, stars the band in a diner, where other patrons are involved in dramas of their own, which are revealed through the use of flashbacks. A couple and the diner's cook are involved in an unspecified crime. A businessman is hiding something in his briefcase. In the end, the two dramas are resolved when the guilty parties are betrayed, the cook gives the couple a time bomb and the businessman is ambushed and killed (though the murder is only suggested). The British version of the video is in black and white, directed by David Mould. It shows the band performing in a desert setting amidst trucks and filming equipment. By the end of the video, it rains on the band, but they continue playing. This was actually the first version of the video produced, but the band expressed dissatisfaction with it, leading to the other video. Only the US version appears on the band's 1998 video compilation 7 Television Commercials, and both the UK and US versions appear on the Radiohead: The Best Of DVD released in 2008 by EMI.

Stop whispering : (Download)

"Stop whispering" is a single from British alternative rock band Radiohead, released as the band's fourth single in 1993. It is the fourth track off their first album, Pablo Honey (1993). Radiohead have not performed the song live since the mid 1990s. The song was written as a tribute to the Pixies, a band that had an important influence over Radiohead at the time. "Stop whispering" is also one of Radiohead's oldest songs; it was created when the band was still known as On A Friday (1985–1991), originally being on Dungeon Demo. The promotional video, directed by Jeffery Plansker, features Thom Yorke in a very out-of-character style, with blond, shoulder-length hair and wearing a white suit. Since then he has favoured darker clothing and short hair.

Stone Temple Pilots - Plush

Stone Temple Pilots, often abbreviated to STP, is an American rock band consisting of Scott Weiland (lead vocals), brothers Robert (bass guitar, vocals) and Dean DeLeo (guitar), and Eric Kretz (drums, percussion). The band found immediate success with the release of their debut album "Core" in 1992, which was certified 8× platinum by the RIAA. Throughout their career, Stone Temple Pilots became one of the most popular rock bands of the 1990s, but were plagued with problems stemming from Weiland's drug addiction and run-ins with the law.

Plush : (Download)

Since the moment they appeared on the scene in the early 90's, Stone Temple Pilots dominated the decade from start to finish, racking up 15 singles on the Billboard Top Ten, winning a "Best Hard Rock Performance" Grammy in 1994 for for "Plush," and having their five albums sell more than 35 million copies worldwide. Of all their peers, STP alone had sustained commercial success, earning greater critical acclaim with each release. The award-winning music video, directed by Josh Taft, was released in 1993 and had heavy rotation on MTV. It combines a visual interpretation of the song's lyrics with footage of a red-haired Weiland singing with the band as a lounge act in an empty bar. There are two different versions of this video, with minor but very noticeable differences. For example, in the version that appears on the Thank You Bonus DVD, the last shot of the video is a woman looking at a mirror image of herself and viewing her whole body while the mirror image drifts away. In another version, she's looking at a mirror image of her face, with water (possibly rain) dripping down the reflection. The song's chord structure was inspired by DeLeo's love of ragtime music, and its lyrics were loosely based on a newspaper article Weiland had read about a girl who had been found dead in an area outside of San Diego. Weiland has also said that the song's lyrics are a metaphor for a failed relationship.

Sick and tired...

The Cardigans is a Swedish band formed in the town of Jönköping in 1992. The band's musical style has varied greatly from album to album and encompasses their early indie leanings passing through '60s-inspired pop and more band-based rock. Peter Svensson and Magnus Sveningsson, both heavy metal musicians, formed the group on October 31 1992 in Jönköping, Sweden, with drummer Bengt Lagerberg, keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson and lead singer Nina Persson. Living together in a small apartment, The Cardigans recorded a demo tape which record producer Tore Johansson heard, leading to an invitation to record at a studio in Malmö. In 1994 they released their debut album "Emmerdale" in Sweden and Japan (it was re-released internationally in 1997).

Sick and tired (Download)

"Emmerdale" though not The Cardigans best album is still a super piece of music. it starts with "Sick and Tired" upbeat but lyrically sounding as though the singer is slightly peed off with life, it is never the less a great song. 'Black letter day' is a slightly sad but lovely sounding song. My least favourite song is 'Sabbath bloody Sabbath' only because I always believe, if you can't do a song as good or better than the original then don't do it at all. All in all this is a very good album with some lovely melodies. their debut album "Emmerdale" (1994) gave them a solid base in their home country and enjoyed some success abroad, especially in Japan. But it wasn't until their breakthrough second album "Life" (1995) that international audiences and critics responded.

Rise & Shine (Download)

"Rise and Shine" is a pop song The Cardigans. It was released as their debut single from their debut 1994 album Emmerdale. It was later re-recorded for their second album Life and was re-released throughout Europe to promote the international version of the album. The rest of 1994 was spent touring Europe and recording "Life", which was released worldwide in 1995. "Life" became an international success, selling more than a million copies and achieving platinum status in Japan. In 1996 "Life" was released under the label Minty Fresh in the U.S., but this release was essentially a compilation of tracks from "Emmerdale" and "Life". "Life" was perhaps a satirical riposte to the first album, and saw the band move in a more avant-garde direction in terms of arrangements and artwork...

Smashing Pumpkins again....

Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band that formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988. Formed by Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar) and James Iha (guitar / backing vocals), the band has included D'arcy Wretzky (bass guitar / backing vocals), Jimmy Chamberlin (drums/percussion), and Melissa Auf der Maur (bass guitar) among its membership. their either song "Cherub Rock" is a song by the American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. It was the first single from their second album, Siamese Dream, and was written by lead vocalist/guitarist Billy Corgan. It was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal at the Grammy Awards of 1994, their first Grammy nomination along with a Best Alternative Music Performance nomination for "Siamese Dream".

Cherub Rock (Download)

"Cherub Rock" was one of the last songs written for the album, and the lyrics relate to Corgan's relationship with his perception of the indie-rock community and larger media. The song was performed in standard tuning with a G sharp octave played at the 11th fret, which the band used on other songs, such as "Drown", Tristessa, and "Starla". The prominent effect on the solo was achieved by recording the guitar solo to two different tapes which were then run simultaneously, with the speed of one tape slightly altered. The video features footage of the band performing the song live in a forest setting. It was shot outside San Francisco entirely on Super8 film at a very modest budget. The director, Kevin Kerslake, employed various destructive techniques when developing the film to give the video a broken and dirty look. Corgan was reportedly extremely unhappy with the shooting experience, and the band never worked with Kerslake again.

Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy

Gin Blossoms is an alternative rock band formed in 1987, in Tempe, Arizona. Members during the band's early years included guitarist and songwriter Doug Hopkins, bassist Bill Leen, vocalist Robin Wilson, guitarist Richard Taylor, drummer Chris McCann, McCann's replacement Dan Henzerling, and Taylor's replacement Jesse Valenzuela. They took their name from a photo of W.C. Fields which bore the caption "W.C. Fields with gin blossoms," referring to the actor's gin-ravaged nose. During their early years, the Gin Blossoms became well-known locally around their hometown of Tempe, Arizona. With the band's frequent touring and resulting increase in popularity, the Blossoms also independently recorded their first full-length album, Dusted. By the early 1990s, the lineup had changed to Leen on bass, Hopkins on guitar, Valenzuela on guitar and vocals, Wilson on vocals and acoustic guitar, and Phillip Rhodes on drums. After being signed with A&M Records, the band began to work on their debut album. Initial attempts to create a major-label record faltered and the band released an EP, Up and Crumbling, instead.

Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy

Reflecting on the unpleasant new experience of life in a band under a major record label, Gin Blossoms named their first full-length studio album "New Miserable Experience". In February 1992, while still working to complete it, founding member and lead guitarist/songwriter Doug Hopkins drank heavily and grew increasingly stubborn and disillusioned with the process. The album was completed and the first single released from it was Hopkins' song "Hey Jealousy". It would reach #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks, largely fuelling the success of New Miserable Experience. However, When the band recorded its debut album New Miserable Experience in February 1992, it was reported that Hopkins was unable to stand during his recording sessions. Faced with the prospect of firing Hopkins or being dropped by A&M, the band terminated Hopkins. Doused in aftershave and mouthwash to cover the effects of his days-long drinking binge, he was flown back to Arizona. He was replaced by Scott Johnson. As a result, the band withheld $15,000 owed to Hopkins until he agreed to sign over half of his publishing royalties. The following year, another song penned by Hopkin's, "Found Out About You", would also reach #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and climb to #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks. As the Gin Blossoms experienced mounting success, performing songs he had written, Hopkins became increasingly despondent. Though he had always dreamed of having a gold record, when he received one for the song "Hey Jealousy", he hung it up for two weeks before taking it down and then destroying it. Nine days later, during an intake consultation in the detox unit of Phoenix's St. Luke's Hospital, Hopkins sneaked out and bought a .38 caliber pistol. The next day, December 4, 1993 Hopkins committed suicide. At his memorial service, Wilson recalls, a woman approached his former band members with a message from Hopkins upon his death: he was the one who had poured sugar in the gas tank of their tour van in 1992.

I wanna be with you...

Amanda Leigh Moore was born on April 10, 1984. Mandy Moore is an American singer–songwriter, actress and fashion designer. She grew up in Florida. Moore became famous as a teenager in the late 1990s, after the release of her teen-oriented pop albums "So Real, I wanna be with you, and Mandy Moore". Moore subsequently branched out into a film career, starring in 2002's "A Walk to Remember" and later appearing in the lead roles of other movies, such as Chasing Liberty, also aimed at teenage audiences. Two of Moore's later films, American Dreamz and Saved!, were satires. Her private life, including her relationships with tennis player Andy Roddick as well as with actors Wilmer Valderrama and Zach Braff became the subject of much discussion in the media. Her most recent album as of September 2009, Amanda Leigh, was released on May 26, 2009. Mandy Moore has sold more than 10 million records worldwide.

"I wanna be with you" is the second album from pop singer Mandy Moore. It was released in May 2000 when she was sixteen years old, six months after her debut album. The album contained several new songs and a few remixes from her previous album "So Real". It peaked at number twenty-one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and reached gold status in the U.S. Some criticized the album as merely a remix album containing little new material. The title track, "I wanna be with you", was the only single to chart and reached number twenty-four on the Hot 100 in the U.S., Moore's highest peak to date. Epic re-released the single "Walk Me Home", but it again failed to make an impact on the charts. The album has sold over 805,000 copies in the United States and over 2.5 million worldwide. I Wanna Be With You was the international version of her debut So Real (which was only released in a few countries), including a mix of her debut and the new songs included on this album.

Cathy Dennis - Waterloo sunset

Cathy Dennis (born Catherine Roseanne Dennis, 25 March 1969, Norwich, England) is a British dance-oriented pop singer–songwriter, record producer and actress. After a moderately successful international solo career, Dennis later received great success as a writer of pop songs, scoring seven UK number ones and winning five Ivor Novello Awards. As a teenager she was spotted recording Stevie Wonder-influenced demos at The Kitchen in Norwich with her father (himself an experienced musician and local restaurateur) on piano. At the time she was working for Norwich Union. Simon Fuller signed her to his 19 Management company (with whom she is still signed) and to label Polydor at aged 17, and this began a career-long association with the impresario that has seen Dennis provide songs for many Fuller-related artists and projects. In 2004, Dennis was listed 66th in the Q Magazine list of the top 100 most influential people in music and in 2006 she won the UK music industry's Woman of the Year Award. According to britishhitsongwriters.com she is the ninety-ninth most successful songwriter in UK singles chart history based on weeks that her compositions have spent on the chart. "Waterloo Sunset" is a song released as a single by The Kinks in 1967, a 1996 version of the song by Cathy Dennis. The lyrics are from the point of view of a solitary man on the south bank of the Thames watching (or imagining) the romantic encounters of a couple at Waterloo Underground, then crossing Waterloo Bridge, The couple - "Terry" and "Julie" - mentioned in the lyrics are widely reported and presumed as being British film stars of the time Terence Stamp and Julie Christie...

Dirty old river must you keep rolling, flowing into the night
People so busy make me feel dizzy, Taxi lights shine so bright
But I don't...need no friends
As long as I gaze at Waterloo sunset
I am in paradise...Sha la la

Every day I look at the world from my window...Sha la la
Jelly jellys in evening time...Waterloo sunset's fine

Terry meets Julie, Waterloo station, Every Friday night
But I am so lazy, I don't want to wonder, I'll stay at home at night
But I don't...Feel afraid
As long as I gaze at Waterloo sunset
I am in paradise...Sha la la

Every day I look at the world from my window...Sha la la
Jelly jellys in evening time...Waterloo sunset's fine

Millions of people, Swarming like flies round, Waterloo underground
Terry and Julie, cross over the river, where everything's safe and sound
And they don't...need no friends
As long as they gaze up Waterloo sunset
They are in paradise

Waterloo sunset's fine
Waterloo sunset's fine
Waterloo sunset's fine...

Sonic Youth... a Tribute of....

Sonic Youth is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1981. The current lineup consists of Thurston Moore (vocals and guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals, bass, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Mark Ibold (bass) and Steve Shelley (drums). In their early career, Sonic Youth was associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. As a result, some consider Sonic Youth as pivotal in the rise of the alternative rock movement.

Sonic Youth's history began when guitarist Thurston Moore moved to New York City in early 1976. Interested in punk, Moore joined the Coachmen, a guitar-based quartet, after arriving in the city. Lee Ranaldo, an art student at Binghamton University, became a fan of the Coachmen, and he and Moore were soon friends. Ranaldo was a member of Glenn Branca's electric guitar ensemble, touring throughout the United States and Europe. After the breakup of the Coachmen, Moore began jamming with Stanton Miranda, whose band, CKM, featured local artist Kim Gordon. Moore soon renamed the band "Sonic Youth". The name came from combining the nickname of MC5's Fred "Sonic" Smith with the trend of reggae artists, such as Big Youth, featuring the word "Youth" in their names. Gordon later recalled that "as soon as Thurston came up with the name Sonic Youth, a certain sound that was more of what we wanted to do came about.

The 1988 double LP Daydream Nation was a critical success that earned Sonic Youth substantial acclaim. The album came in second on the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll and topped the year-end album lists of the NME, CMJ, and Melody Maker. In 2006, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. The lead single from the album, "Teenage Riot", was the first song from the band to reach significant success, receiving heavy airplay in modern and college rock stations. A number of prominent music periodicals including Rolling Stone hailed Daydream Nation as one of the best albums of the decade and named Sonic Youth as the "Hot Band" in its "Hot" issue. Unfortunately, distribution problems arose and Daydream Nation was often difficult to find in stores. Moore considered Enigma a "cheap-jack Mafioso outfit" and the band began looking for a major label deal.

JC (Download)

In 1992, the band released "Dirty" on the DGC label. Their influence as tastemakers continued with their discovery of acclaimed skateboard video director Spike Jonze, who they recruited for the video for "100%", which also featured skateboarder turned actor Jason Lee. This song, along with the Gordon tune "JC" contain lyrical references to the murder of Joe Cole, a friend who worked with the band as a roadie. The album features artwork by Los Angeles-based artist Mike Kelley. In addition, Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise opened on numerous occasions for Sonic Youth in the late 90s. "Dirty" features a guest appearance by Ian McKaye (Minor Threat and Fugazi) playing guitar on the track "Youth Against Fascism".

In 1994 the band released Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, their best charting release in the United States, which peaked at #34 on the Billboard 200. The album was filled with low-key melodies and even produced a hit single, "Bull in the Heather". Moore and Gordon's daughter, Coco Hayley Gordon Moore was born earlier in the year, and many of the songs from the album were never played live because there was never a full tour to support the album due to Gordon's pregnancy. The song was named after a racehorse from a bumper sticker given to Thurston and Kim from Bob Nastanovich of Pavement. In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Bull in the Heather" at number 48 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever. The song starts with a sound which is very recognizable in the music of Sonic Youth, by striking a tailed bridge guitar, in this case a Fender Jazzmaster, behind the bridge.

Bull in the Heather (Download)

The music video features former Bikini Kill and Le Tigre singer Kathleen Hanna dancing, throwing Thurston Moore about by his guitar and kissing Kim Gordon, while wearing speedos over her tights. During filming, Hanna gave Thurston a bloodied lip. The video is directed by Tamra Davis. The scenes of the guitarists jumping around on a bed were recreated from a photo Kim Gordon gave to Davis of Thurston when he was younger. In the video, Kim Gordon is five months pregnant.

From Sonic Youth's earliest days, Kim Gordon had occasionally played guitar with the group. About the time of A Thousand Leaves and Washing Machine she began playing guitar more frequently, resulting in a three-guitar and drums lineup. These songs were something of a shift for the group's sound, and would lead to the introduction of a fifth member a few years later. the group announced on their website that ex-Pavement member Mark Ibold would play bass for the band on their upcoming tour.

Celebrating twenty-five years of musical excellence, New York indie heroes Sonic Youth are aging well. Not in a rush to reinvent, Sonic Youth return with a sound similar to 2004's Sonic Nurse. Perhaps not the most inventive or awe-inspiring album in the band's catalog, "Rather Ripped" is a delightfully solid album which was released on June 13, 2006, with some stellar sonic landscapes within. Opening with the Gordon delivered atmospheric and oddly uplifting "Reena", Sonic Youth kick start the album in fine fashion. Moore and Renaldo's winding guitars shimmy around each other playfully as Shelley's driving beat pushes Gordon's seductive vocals. Shifting between gorgeous melodies and hazardous weaving, the guitars on the song are just what fans have come to expect from the band.

Reena (Download)

A funky bass line and mind-bending distortion drive Renaldo's eerie "Rats". Perfectly creepy and off-kilter, Renaldo's tale of betrayal is startling. Placed back-to-back, Moore's "Incinerate" and "Do You Believe In Rapture" are the best of the bunch. The most ear-catching song from Sonic Youth in quite a while, "Incinerate" is brilliant. The striking melodic guitar interplay, frantic beat, and engaging hook make "Incinerate" one of the best songs of the year. Moore gruffly scoffs, "You douse my soul with gasoline / you flicked a match into my brain", describing a relationship gone sour. In stark contrast to the frantic pace of "Incinerate", a slowly thumping beat marches deep in the background of the religious "Rapture". An atmospheric treasure, the sparse song questions the end of days; lingering long after it has ended.

Ripped succeeds in large part because of the signature Sonic Youth guitar interplay and inspired distortion laden compositions. Although not a large step either forward or backwards for the band, more of the same from a pioneering band like Sonic Youth is certainly not a negative.

Sugar Kane (Download)

"Sugar Kane" was the third single from Sonic Youth's 1992 album Dirty. It was released in 1993 on DGC. The music video for Sugar Kane was directed by Nick Egan. The video is shot in New York City and portrays Sonic Youth performing in the midst of a fashion show showcasing "grunge" clothing. The clothing, in fact, is one of the collections done by Marc Jacobs, "Grunge Collection", for Perry Ellis in 1992. Marc is also a close friend to Kim Gordon and the band. The video also marks the first film appearance of Chloe Sevigny. The title may be connected to the Marilyn Monroe character 'Sugar' Kane Kowalczyk in some like it Hot.

Liz Phair... Queen of Indie-rock

Elizabeth Clark "Liz" Phair (born April 17, 1967) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. Phair began her career in the early 1990's by self-releasing lo-fi audio cassettes under the moniker Girly Sound, before signing with Matador Records and becoming one of the leading artists of the 1990s DIY indie rock underground. In 2003, Phair's fourth album, Liz Phair, was released on her new label, Capitol Records and her music began to move in a more pop rock-oriented approach which resulted in a fan and media backlash. Her signature guitar, which she is often seen playing (and is prominent upon the cover of her self-titled fourth album), is a Fender Duo-Sonic II. Her album Exile in Guyville was chosen as one of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Phair was born in New Haven, Connecticut, but was raised in Winnetka, Illinois by wealthy adoptive parents. She graduated from New Trier High School in 1985. During high school, Phair was involved in student government, yearbook, and the cross country team, and took AP Studio Art her senior year among many other advanced-level classes. She attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, and majored in art history. Phair's entry into the music industry began when she met guitarist Chris Brokaw, a member of the band Come. Brokaw and Phair moved to San Francisco together, and Phair tried to become an artist there. After moving back to Chicago, Phair began writing songs and recording homemade tapes under the name Girly Sound, and supported herself by selling her charcoal drawings on the streets of Wicker Park. She became part of the alternative music scene in Chicago and became friends with Material Issue and Urge Overkill, two of Chicago's upstart bands to go national in the early 1990s, as well as Brad Wood and John Henderson, head of Feel Good All Over, an independent label in Chicago. (A later attempt at re-recording the Girly Sound tapes failed after arguments between Henderson and Phair.)

Hoping to capitalize on the acclaim for her debut album, the release of Phair's second album received substantial media attention and an advertising blitz. Whip-Smart debuted at #27 in 1994 and "Supernova", the first single, became a Top Ten modern rock hit, and the video was frequently featured on MTV. Phair also landed the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine with the headline "A Rock Star is Born." Nonetheless, the album received mixed reviews, and although it was certified Gold. Phair's third album, entitled "whitechocolatespaceegg", was finally released in 1998 after some delays, which included a disagreement about content; at one point, the label rejected the album as submitted, and asked Phair to write a few additional radio-friendly songs for the set. The album displayed a more mature Phair, and reflected some of the ways marriage and motherhood affected her. The single "Polyester Bride" received some airplay, but the album was no more successful than her previous records. To promote the record Phair joined the now legendary Lilith Fair. Phair performed on the main stage along with acts like Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow and Missy Elliott.

In 2003, her self-titled fourth album was released on her new label, Capitol Records, Phair had not released an album in several years; she had been working on her record, as well as making guest appearances on other tracks, The debut single "Why Can't I?", co-written by The Matrix, did reach the Top 40 charts in North America, and its follow-up, "Extraordinary," was also somewhat successful: it appeared on the soundtrack to the 2004 movie Raising Helen and was the promotional theme for the 2004 Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament; in March 2007, the song began appearing in Gatorade television advertisements. Phair continued to flirt with sexually explicit themes, however, as was most evident in a track called "H.W.C.", standing for "Hot White Cum".

Liz Phair - Everything to me (Download)

Somebody's Miracle is the fifth album by Liz Phair, released on October 4, 2005 (see 2005 in music) on Capitol Records. From September 2004 through April 2005, she composed fourteen tracks spanning from lo-fi guitar-driven to high-gloss produced tracks. Much like her debut album, Exile in Guyville, Somebody's Miracle was originally modeled after another canonical album, "Songs in the key of Life" by Stevie Wonder, though only elements of this exist in the final product. The first single, "Everything to me" was released to radio on August 1, 2005. At an estimated 84,000 copies, Somebody's Miracle remains Phair's lowest selling LP to date. The album features a softer side of Phair, with themes of innocence, loss, and love. Many critics and fans accused Phair of having lost her edge. Phair responded to backlash by saying, "If you are an old fan and it doesn't fit what you need, don't buy the disc." Prior to the album's release, Phair embarked on a short acoustic tour where she played in smaller venues, bars, and clubs. After the album's release, she and her band went on a more extensive tour playing at larger venues...

If you like obscure sounding songs and sexually explicit lyrics, then you'll love Liz...

NYHC era with Sick of it All

Sick of it All is a New York Hardcore (NYHC) band formed by brothers Lou Koller (vocals) and Pete Koller (guitar), Armand Majidi (drums) and Rich Cipriano (bass) in 1986. The band received bad publicity in December 1992 when Wayne Lo, a prep-college student, shot and killed two people and wounded four others at the Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Widely-circulated photos of him at his arrest showed him wearing a "Sick of it All" t-shirt. After being inundated with claims that they initiated violence at shows and through their music, the band defended themselves in the press (particularly The New York Times).

"Scratch the Surface" is Sick of it All's third (official) studio album, released in 1994. It was the band's major label debut on Eastwest Records, their first venture away from an indie label. Although the album did not reach any of the major charts, Scratch the Surface subsequently became Sick of it All's most successful release, and it produced two singles "Step Down" and "Scratch the Surface". The video of "Step Down" was also featured in the Beavis and Butt-head episode "Premature Evacuation". The record was the first recorded with long-time friend and former Straight Ahead, Rest In Pieces, Youth of Today and Agnostic Front bass player Craig Setari, who had replaced Rich Cipriano in early 1993.

As one of the longest standing bands still proudly waving the flag of New York Hardcore, Sick of it All have made their mark as one of the cornerstones of NYHC, proving that heart, hard work and dedication to hardcore is about more than just the music and an image, it’s a way of life. This socially driven attitude and message is something that’s always kept the band close with their fanbase from the very beginning. Originally formed by brothers Lou and Pete Koller in the mid-'80s, Sick of it All set the tone of their music and ideology by offering a no-frills view of the world around them. Often revolving around politics, social injustices and life on streets in New York, the band wore their views on their sleeve and made no apologies, often times attempting to turn the tables to include thread of positivity, a hope for change and improvement...

Belinda...Leave a light on...

My story begins in 1991. It all started when I saw her video to "Leave a light on" on earlier RCTI Program "Hollywood Top 10 Charts" and I was enchanted from that point onwards. What this meant for me is that my (then) non-existent music interest started and I had a focal point in my life which was crucially different to the rest of my peers. There was nothing wrong with the music I was listening to at the time (indeed, the music at that time, heavy rock - I still listen to now), but the important point from my point of view was that Belinda was unique to me from within my peer group. Belinda Jo Carlisle (born August 17, 1958, real name: Belinda Kurczesky) is a Grammy Award-nominated American singer. Carlisle is the lead vocalist and a founding member of the groundbreaking all-female new wave band The Go-Go's, and also a successful solo artist. During her career, The Go-Go's became one of the most successful American bands of the early '80s, The Go-Go's broke up in 1985, and Carlisle embarked on a solo career...(from Wikipedia)

Take my hand...Tell me what you are feeling
Understand...This is just the beginning
Although I have to go
It makes me feel like crying
I dont know when I'll see you again

Darling leave a light on for me
I'll be there before you close the door
To give you all the love that you need
Darling leave a light on for me
cause when the world takes me away
You are still the air that I breathe

I can't explain I don't know
Just how far I have to go
But darling I'll keep the key
Just leave a light on for me

Yes I know...What I'm asking is crazy
You could go...Just get tired of waiting
But if I lose your love
Torn out by my desire
That would be the one regret of my life

Darling leave a light on for me
I'll be there before you close the door
To give you all the love that you need
Darling leave a light on for me
cause when the world takes me away
You are still the air that I breathe

I can't explain I don't know
Just how far I have to go
But darling I'll keep the key
Just leave a light on for me

Just like a spark lights up the dark
Baby that's your heart...

"Leave a light on" is a pop song written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley, produced by Nowels for Belinda Carlisle's third solo album "Runaway Horses" (1989). It was released as the album's first single in the end of 1989 (see 1989 in music) as a CD single, 7" single and a 12" single. The song reached within the top ten position in Australia, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, Netherland and the UK, achieving #4 peaks in the UK, making it one of her biggest hits to date.

Come on feel The Lemonheads...

Evan Dando, Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz formed the Lemonheads as teenagers at the Commonwealth School in Boston around 1986. The and was originally called the Whelps until inspiration came from a brand of candy, which Dando noted was "sweet on the inside and sour on the outside," possibly a metaphor for the band's sound. The band recorded and self-relesaed the 7" EP "Laughing all the way to the Cleaners".

After high school, Dando enrolled at Skidmore College but couldn't maintain his grades and dropped out to pursue a musical career. Having signed to local label Taang! Records, the Lemonheads released the albums "Hate your friends" (1987), "Creator "(1988), and "Lick" (1989) with Deily and Dando sharing lead vocals and songwriting duties. The band enjoyed a good deal of college radio airplay and were popular in the burgeoning indie rock scene, up until Deily left the band in 1989. Dando then recruited David Ryan on drums, signed to major label Atlantic Records, and produced the album "Lovey" in 1990. Straddling punk rock, country music and heavy metal, Lovey album was released a year before the commercial explosion of grunge and did not sell well by mainstream standards—roughly 30,000 copies. ...

Evan Dando
cut his losses and flew to Australia to write some songs with friends Nic Dalton and Tom Morgan.

The Lemonheads' popularity grew in 1992 with the album "it's a Shame about Ray", followed by a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson", which eventually became one of the band's most successful singles. The band officially renamed themselves from "Lemonheads" to "The Lemonheads" prior to the release of the "Come on Feel the Lemonheads" LP. A huge breakthrough single still eluded the band as they released "Come on Feel the Lemonheads" in late 1993. This was a successful album but paved the way for future madness with tracks like "it's about time" and "The Great big no" The band enjoyed modest mainstream success.

The Great big no : DOWNLOAD

Evan Dando famously befriended Oasis and appeared at the band's live shows. The cracks were beginning to show, and after one particularly disjointed interview where Dando (not being able to speak, having lost his voice after smoking crack cocaine) admitted to having a drugs problem. he was no longer viewed as the "Slacker Sex Kitten" of the previous year... and in 1996, Dando re-formed The Lemonheads, featuring old friends John Strohm Murph (ex-Dinosaur Jr), as well as Ken Lyons of 38 Special. This band produced another Lemonheads album, "Car Button Cloth". While featuring jangly guitar songs such as "If I could talk I'd tell you," this set also showed off the darker side of Dando's writing: "Break me" and "Losing your mind" suggested that all was not well with Dando.

On 23 April 2008 at the inaugural NME US Awards ceremony at the El Rey in Los Angeles, Dando received the classic album award for "It's a shame about Ray", The album and its title track was inspired partially from a club owner who called everyone Ray. Band leader Evan Dando later saw the actual line "It's a shame about Ray" in a Sydney newspaper article about something that happened to a child named Ray. "It's a shame about Ray" was a big international hit for the band, as well as a #5 hit on the Modern Rock Tracks chart in America...(from wikipedia)

Edit Video (simple)

Sophie Ellis Bextor.....

Sophie Michelle Ellis-Bextor (born 10 April 1979) is a multi-platinum selling English singer-songwriter and model. Her music is a mixture of mainstream Pop, Disco, Nu-Disco, and 1980s electronic influences. Sophie Michelle Ellis-Bextor was born to Robin Bextor, an award-winning film director, and Janet Ellis, then an actress, but later better known as a presenter on the TV series Blue Peter (on which Sophie appeared with her mother at the age of six, modelling snoods). Her parents divorced when Sophie was four years old. She has three sisters and two brothers. She has often spoken about being very close to her family growing up and she often takes her brothers and sisters to work with her. Her brother Jackson Ellis-Leach is currently her drummer. She attended school at St. Stephen's School and later Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith. Among her earliest public performances were with the W11 Opera children's opera from the age of thirteen, and she is now a patron of the organisation.

Ellis-Bextor began her musical career in 1997, with an indie band called The Audience. She sang the lead vocal in the band. While she was a band member, readers of Melody Maker elected her to the Number 1 position among the 'most sexy people in rock'. She recorded a duet with Manic Street Preachers—Black Holes for the Young—as a B-side for their 1998 single The Everlasting. Several songs released by theaudience are I Got the Wherewithal, If You Can't Do It When You're Young; When Can You Do It?, I Know Enough (I Don't Get Enough), and A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed (perhaps their best-known single). The band split in December 1998. In 1999 Ellis-Bextor made an appearance on the Departure Lounge album Out Of Here. After The Audience split, Ellis-Bextor took a year off from singing. In 2000, Ellis-Bextor collaborated with Italian DJ Spiller on adding vocals to his then-instrumental club track "Groovejet", her first recorded work since that with theaudience. "Groovejet (If this ain't love)" entered the U.K. charts at No. 1, just beating former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham on her first solo outing to the top spot. Since then, the two have been described as rivals. Both women deny, however, that there is any rivalry between the two of them. "Groovejet" won several awards: No. 1, Pop Top 20; No. 1, ILR; No. 1, Radio 1; No. 8, top dance track of 2000 and single of the year in Melody Maker. In the Metro Newspaper, it received ninth place in the contest for the Greatest No. 1 of all time, beating even Madonna. In 2000, it was a finalist in The Record of the Year. In that same year, it won the awards for Best Single and Best Ibiza Tune at the Ericsson Muzik Awards.

"Music gets the best of me" is a song by Sophie Ellis-Bextor released in 2002, from her first solo album, Read my lips, although it was only included upon the re-released edition of the album. Although most of her fans like this song, it did not do so well on the charts. Her first three singles went straight into the top 3, where "Music gets the best of me" only made it as high as #14 on the UK charts (but it managed to peak at #4 on the World Chart in 2003). It was also poorly charted in the ARIA charts too. This is most likely because Read My Lips had gone platinum by then..... "Music gets the best of me" also has two different music videos. One is the original version, the version that was released to TV and the other one is an alternate version. Both are available on her DVD "Watch my lips". The first video shows clips of Sophie having fun in the sun. We see her swimming, tanning and just enjoying her time. Later near the end of the video, we see Sophie having fun at a carnival. During most of the video, we see her with headphones showing that she's enjoying her music. The alternative version of "Music gets the best of me" shows Sophie going into a dinner party where she is not invited. She then puts in a CD, and starts to sing and goes from place to place. It then ends by her saying that she had a fun time at the party, and leaving. Both videos were directed by Sophie Muller.
